Most of the population lived in small villages on the coastlines or around rivers that flow into lagoons that were used as water sources for agriculture (chiefly fishing). The only permanent settlement was Puna Pau (“high place”) which had high cliffs behind it where large statues stood before they were moved inland and buried under soil during times when food supplies became scarce due to drought conditions caused by El Niño events between 850-1200 CE
